Not all slip-and-fall accidents happen inside of the home. There is always the possibility of you falling and injuring yourself while at work, in a store, stadium, mall or any establishment in Ohio. Most slip-and-fall accidents result in minor injuries. But there are circumstances that can cause you to suffer severe wounds that could result in temporary and permanent disability.

Property owners must keep their properties in good condition to reduce the risk of harm and injury to their guests. When they do not, they may be liable for accidents that happen. Liability is not based solely on their responsibility to keep their buildings free of dangers that could cause harm. Courts give careful consideration to whether the victims could have avoided the hazards that lead to their injuries or death. Because slip-and-fall accidents are complex, consider the following information when filing a personal injury claim

There must be evidence

You should gather as much evidence as possible from the scene of your accident. Look around and document the conditions you believe were contributing factors. Include as much detail as you can remember. Be sure to mention any buckled carpets, wet surfaces, uneven floors and other hazards. If possible, you should take photos of the scene before anything changes. Do not rely on the property owner to provide them for you.

Identify witnesses

The more witnesses you can identify, the better chances you have of proving your claim. Get the names of all witnesses who were around before, during and after your accident. Be sure to get their contact information.

File an accident report

You should report your accident to the property owner, administrator and management. Keep a copy of the incident report for yourself. If you plan to file a claim for compensation, you should not agree to any resolutions they offer. Be sure to document the names of all employees who were around at the time of your accident.

Get medical treatment

You may not feel your injuries are obvious or serious enough for you to get medical attention or file a claim against the property owner. But a medical professional can assess your body to determine the nature and extent of any wounds you have from your accident and document them. You may require diagnostics like a CAT scan or MRI to determine if you have a concussion or some other type of brain injury or physical trauma that could result in catastrophic health complications and death.

All slip-and-fall accidents have the potential to cause great harm. Many of them are preventable incidents. Knowing what you should do after experiencing a fall accident can enable you to protect your right to compensation and hold the property owner accountable.
