Protecting Yourself From Uninsured Motorists

Protecting Yourself From Uninsured Motorists

One of the most important things drivers can do to protect themselves and their loved ones, is purchase full-coverage auto insurance. That is, auto insurance that covers you both, when you are at-fault for an accident, and when you are the innocent victim of an auto accident.

Most people assume that when they purchase auto insurance, it is sufficient to cover you for all of your losses in the event of an auto accident. You may also assume that every driver on the road in Ohio carries auto insurance given that it is the law in the State of Ohio. However, according to the State of Ohio, approximately one in eight Ohio Driver’s are uninsured. Ohio has required drivers to carry auto insurnace for injuries and property damage since 1953, however, rate of uninsured drivers continues to rise.

The best way to provide protection against an uninsured motorist is to make sure that your auto insurance policy contains uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. This provision to your policy will help to protect you from the negligence of other drivers who cause an accident and they do not have insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage is a provision in your policy to fill the gaps of the other driver’s insufficient insurance coverage. These provisions in your auto policy may also extend to family members and passengers.

Ohio Law does not require that these provisions be carried, thus, they are often overlooked when purchasing insurance. However, the extra cost can be well worth if if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver.
